The Ancient Healing Technique – Ayur (Life) Veda (Knowledge)

Every western natural healing system has some basis in Ayurveda. The sister science to Ayurveda is yoga. Both are used to create balance in the body, mind, and soul. Ayurveda peers into the nature of life through the wisdom of Mother Nature. As a philosophy of life, it teaches us to live in harmony with the basic laws of nature.

Ayurveda is an ancient healing system that focuses on creating and maintaining health and happiness, through balance in mind, body, and spirit.

Ayurveda is based on the belief that we are not just physical beings, but are also expressions of energy, and consciousness. In Ayurveda, we look at the body in a balanced way. While modern medicine is based on the physical structure, Ayurveda is based on the physical structure and the energies behind that structure.

In Ayurveda, there is no “average person” or “standard treatment”. Every individual is a one of a kind with a unique blueprint for health Our physical and mental/emotional body consists of the elements, ether, air, fire, water, earth and so does everything else in the universe. Depending on the combination of these elements in the body 3 dominant constitutional types exist. These constitutional types or Doshas are specified as Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. The uniqueness of the elements in your makeup allows for an infinite number of constitutional types. This unique combination of elements leads each of us to have a different way of creating imbalance, balance, and healing in our lives Depending on your individual doshic type there is a specific propensity on how you move through the world, physically, mentally, emotionally. It also shows your tendency to create balance and imbalances in your system.

Pitta types tend to be more prone to inflammatory issues, whereas Vata types may suffer from stress disorders, or anxiety and people with predominantly Kapha dosha may have a tendency to be overweight. But these are very basic examples of how the dosha operate in your body. There is a full range of tendencies and disorders that are unique to your Doshic makeup. Knowing your dosha is only one part of understanding how to live.

Knowing and understanding your doshic type is done by constitutional (Dosha) assessment. This assessment is a diagnostic tool that is used by the Ayurveda practitioner to determine the best plan of action for improved health and well-being for you. Food, herbs or routines that will benefit one doshic type may aggravate the other and therefore create more of an imbalance.
Instead of “catching something”, like a cold, a disease, or mental state, Ayurveda sees illness as a manifestation of imbalance. Ayurveda addresses the root causes, not only the symptoms; whether it be physical, energetic or emotional.

Treatments may consist of working with lifestyle choices, routines, body therapies, food, herbs, yoga and inner energies to create health.

Ayurveda health is a continuous and participatory process that embraces all aspects of life and you are part of that healing process. It is important to remember that in the west we often exhibit imbalances, so what Dosha we think we are, may in actuality be an imbalance that we have created over years of patterning, and living in a certain way. The Dosha’s are connected to everything, from seasons to times of day, from the emotional body to the physical.
